In January 2013, I started working at Johnson Lambert (JL). From the day of my interview I knew JL wasn't your typical public accounting firm. When I began working at Johnson Lambert this past summer, I had an expectation of what daily life is like at an accounting firm. This was likely born in part out of stories from friends who had interned elsewhere, as well as from general stereotypes about accountants being dull, withdrawn people. However, almost immediately after my internship began, I saw that being a tax accountant wasn’t so solitary or dry as I might have expected.

I may have been a little nervous, but also excited. There is something about beginning new life endeavors that brings excitement, but also the inevitable hesitation of the unknown that keeps your tension and natural defenses armed and ready. As the doors opened before me I was greeted by big smiles and welcomes. The internship had begun.

When I first chose to major in accounting, the versatility of the profession was a major factor. At the time, movies highlighting the value of accounting skills, such as “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Schindler’s List,” seemed to be around every corner. After graduation, upon joining Arthur Andersen in Boston, I was hit immediately with the choice between tax and audit.

The article comments that, in CPA firms with greater than fifty employees, only 17% of the partners are women. This statistic surprised me because my experience in public accounting is vastly different from the norm.

I only know one creature that enjoyed studying for the CPA exam—my dog, Memphis. He would come running as soon as he heard the Becker lecture music, and jump on my lap when Tim Gearty came on the screen. He could watch those lectures for hours if I let him.
